Laurent Wauquiez didn’t hold back. During the New Year’s wishes for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region at the Lyon Regional Hotel, the LR deputy from Haute-Loire and special advisor to Fabrice Pannekoucke surprised his audience with a bold proposal picked up by Actu Lyon: to move towards a total ban on mobile phones in high schools managed by the Region. This statement stands out against the current climate and reignites a heated debate about the role of digital technology in schools.
Where the State is hesitant, the Region wants to push forward. Adopted on January 26 at the National Assembly, the law regarding mobile phone usage in high schools was eventually softened, allowing its use in certain areas. Laurent Wauquiez considers this approach too timid. According to him, we need to... do exactly the opposite and take a clear stand: zero phones allowed inside schools.
Making high school a “sanctuary” for concentration
The goal is simple: put learning back in the spotlight. "In a high school, we’re here to learn, to focus, not to look at our phones,” emphasized the official. The idea is to launch an experiment in several willing schools, in consultation with parents, educational teams, and students, to concretely assess the effects of a total ban.
The timeline could be quick. Laurent Wauquiez mentions the possible implementation starting this school year in candidate high schools. A testing phase followed by an assessment, with the ambition to "reaffirm that high school is a sanctuary." A strong statement that may appeal to some parents and teachers, but could also lead to disagreements.grinding teeth among ultra-connected students.
