This is a breakthrough that could change the way some cancers are treated. The Léon Bérard Center, a reference in oncology located in the 8th district of Lyon, officially inaugurated, on Tuesday, June 30, a unique system in Europe that allows radiotherapy to be performed with patients... standing.Until now, radiotherapy sessions were always done while lying down. Thanks to this new technology, some patients can now receive their treatment in a position that is much closer to their natural stance.

A more natural position to enhance treatments

The goal is not just to change the position but also to improve the quality of care. According to Professor Vincent Grégoire, Director of Research and...

In the teaching of radiotherapy at the Léon Bérard Center, the vertical position aligns more with human body physiology. This would allow for a better distribution of radiation doses while improving clinical outcomes.

This new approach also reduces certain respiratory constraints and promotes a more natural position for the base of the tongue, thereby limiting the radiation of healthy tissues surrounding the treated area. A double benefit that could enhance patient comfort and reduce side effects. Another noteworthy advantage: the machine takes up less space than traditional radiotherapy equipment. In the long term, it could be used to treat various types of cancers, including those of the prostate, breast, cervix, or rectum.

An innovation born in Lyon and destined for a bright future

This European first is based on several years of research.A pilot study conducted between 2021 and 2022 already allowed for testing this procedure on patients with tumors located in the lower part of the abdomen. The researchers assessed both the comfort experienced by the patients and the accuracy of their positioning during treatments.

The project brings together the expertise of the Léon Bérard Centre, the American company Leo Cancer Care, which is developing the device, and the French startup TheraPanacea, specialized in digital tools for treatment planning and adaptation. Supported by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), this innovation once again places Lyon among the most advanced regions in medical research.

A new study is already planned to extend this technology to other cancers, including those of the lungs, breasts, as well as tumors of the head and neck. This further solidifies Lyon's role as one of the leading hubs in Europe for innovation in cancerology.
