A whole slice of Lyon's soul is shaking. On the Boulevard des Canuts, in Croix-Rousse, the famous mural bearing its name — this monumental trompe-l'œil of 1,200 m² that brings joy to tourists, locals, and urban heritage lovers — is now threatened with disappearance according to information from Actu Lyon. The reason? Not a botched brushstroke, but a deeper issue: the wall it rests on is in terrible condition. So degraded that the City of Lyon has been forced to issue a peril order to secure the surroundings and prevent any pieces of facade from landing on the sidewalk… or worse.

A weakened building owned by a private owner

Created in 1987 by the artists from CitéCréation and renovated...

Cute; created in 2013, the mural is a lively depiction of the neighborhood, where the characters age over the years and where Croix-Rousse tells its story between illusion and reality. An evolving, poetic, heritage work that the Lyonnais have watched grow like a caring old neighbor. Problem: while the mural is recognized as a remarkable wall of communal interest, the building belongs to a private owner, which complicates intervention a bit.

Fortunately, all is not lost. Thanks to its listing in the remarkable walls program, the restoration of the wall could be partially financed by the City. A welcome help, as it's going to take many euros and scaffolding to save this giant painting threatened by time and wear. In the meantime, the perimeter is secured, experts are busy, and residents are crossing their fingers: hands off our mural.
