It's a symbol of the city that has just taken a serious hit with age. On Tuesday, June 17, Bernard Lacombe, the last living representative of the famous Fresque des Lyonnais, passed away, taking with him a piece of history, one that’s tied to football, of course, but also to a Lyon that still buzzed with its vibrant legends. Since the creation of this monumental work at the base of Croix-Rousse in 1995 by the CitéCréation workshop, there had only been five "contemporary" personalities featured among the 30 local figures immortalized on the wall: Paul Bocuse, Bernard Pivot, Bertrand Tavernier, Frédéric Dard, and of course, Bernard Lacombe. They have all now truly joined the Lyonnais pantheon.

New Faces Coming to the Mural

The mural, a true urban postcard that attracts tourists and makes locals proud, now finds itself lacking living faces. But not for long. Behind the scenes, the brushes of CitéCréation are getting ready for a major update. A big consultation has been launched in recent weeks to select the new faces of the city to be painted. And the suspense is high! Wendie Renard, Karim Benzema, Mélina Robert-Michon, and Grégory Coupet are in the running to represent the local sports scene. Other unexpected names like Mimie Mathy and Lucie Aubrac are also making the rounds.

Meanwhile, Jean-Michel Aulas, who seemed almost indispensable a few years ago, might find himself in the shadows due to his political news. And what if the future lies with the youth, like Alexandre Lacazette or Rayan Cherki? The mystery remains unsolved, but one thing is for sure: the wall of Lyonnais has not finished making headlines.
