In Lyon, independent venues sometimes operate with just three projectors, a whole lot of passion, and a good dose of DIY spirit. But for La Boîte à Gants, the story could suddenly come to a halt. The associative theater nestled on Pierre-Blanc Street, in the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse, is currently facing an eviction notice issued by its owner. The issue? The association's refusal to sign a commercial lease deemed "baseless" by its members and their lawyer.

Since the announcement of the procedure, a wave of support has formed around this unique venue that has hosted concerts, shows, and community events for over ten years in one of the most artistic neighborhoods of Lyon. Petitions, online fundraisers, and support evenings planned for June 8, 9, 15, and 16… the defenders of this place hope to convince the courts that La Boîte à Gants is much more than just a simple venue: it’s a true heartbeat of the neighborhood.
A Passionately Crafted Space That Has Become a Symbol of the Pentes
The story of La Boîte à Gants is almost like a script from an independent film shot between two traboules. In 2011, Jésus Ankatche and his troupe stumbled upon the former Théâtre de l’Oseraie left to decay. It was impossible to find the owner. Nevertheless, the troupe decided to clean and renovate the space...
r and bring this forgotten space back to life. A few weeks later, the owner finally reappeared and agreed to their presence through a vague arrangement mixing free rent and cash payments.
For years, the association has tried to establish a clear rental framework, but with no success. Today, the owner is demanding a commercial lease with a rent of 1,650 euros per month, including expenses, as well as reimbursement for the previous years. A proposal that the association sees as a legal trap.
La Croix-Rousse wants to preserve its DNA
turelIn recent years, several iconic establishments in the neighborhood have disappeared or faced serious challenges, like the Valseuses and L’Ambuscade. The mayor of the 1st arrondissement, Yasmine Bouagga, has offered her moral support to the theater, believing that La Boîte à Gants perfectly represents “the spirit of the Pentes.” It's a way to remind everyone that these little spots are also what keeps the cultural heart of Lyon beating, far from the big institutional machines.
The hearing is scheduled for June 22 at the judicial court. Until then, the residents of the neighborhood are determined to show that a cultural scene like this won't just fade away easily.
