The information is confirmed by Le Progrès: the German discount chain Aldi is opening a prime location in the city center. After weeks of speculation, Aldi will inaugurate its very first store on the Presqu'île on December 9, with a public opening the following day. It’s a strategic placement in the historic building of the “Grands magasins des Cordeliers,” where Boulanger has been since 2011.
A 1,000 m² space dedicated to discount shopping
On the ground floor of this iconic building, the grocery store will spread its aisles over 1,000 m². This huge area will allow for a wide selection of products at rock-bottom prices, right in the heart of Lyon. This will already be the fourth Aldi in Lyon, following two takeovers of Leader Price in the 3rd district.
In 2021, the 8th district welcomed a new addition, and in 2022, the 9th district will join in the fun. And that's not all: a fitness brand is also set to join the building very soon. The Cordeliers building is undergoing a major commercial renovation. Built at the end of the 19th century and developed over five floors, this historic gem of 6,500 m² is in the midst of a revitalizing makeover. The entire commercial section is being reimagined to breathe new life into this iconic site in the city center, while leaving the adjoining business center untouched, as it has a different owner. The arrival of Aldi marks a new milestone in the transformation of the area.
Boulanger goes high-end
In light of this renewal, Boulanger isn’t going anywhere! The brand is reorganizing its spaces and will now expand to 3,500 m² across two floors. The goal: to offer a new, more premium concept that aligns better with the expectations of a bustling city center.
in full transformation. A rise in quality that will now coexist with the explosive arrival of Aldi.
