If you dream of seeing the region from above, head to Mont Saint-Rigaud. Nestled in the heart of the Beaujolais mountains, this iconic peak is simply the highest point in the Rhône department. Thanks to its famous observation tower that stands over 15 meters tall, visitors can symbolically reach an altitude of 1,012 meters, crossing the legendary threshold of 1,000 meters.

Up there, the view is breathtaking. The hills of Beaujolais and the Lyonnais mountains stretch as far as the eye can see, while the Alps, the Jura, and the first foothills of the Massif Central outline the horizon. It’s an exceptional panorama that makes you feel like you’re alone at the top of the world, or at least the Rhône.

An adventure accessible to all nature lovers

Good news: you don’t need to be a seasoned mountaineer to enjoy the summit. Several parking areas make it easy to access Mont Saint-Rigaud, including one that's just a few hundred meters from the peak. Mountain biking enthusiasts will also find their bliss here, while hikers can explore a vast network of paths winding through the forests and ridges.

Among the most popular routes is a loop of about 15 kilometers that showcases the natural beauty of the area. It’s the perfect playground to breathe a little deeper, walk a little farther, and forget, for a day, the hustle and bustle of the city.

Between History, Legends, and Spirituality

Mont Saint-Rigaud is more than just its breathtaking landscapes. For centuries, this peak has nurtured beliefs and captivated travelers. In ancient times, a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter stood here. Later, in the 7th century, a chapel under the authority of the Abbey of Cluny was built on the heights before fading away over time.

Even today, the site retains an air of mystery. At the foot of the summit, a sacred fountain attracts the curious. According to tradition, its water is believed to have healing properties against rheumatism. Surrounding it, wooden crosses left by pilgrims remind us that this corner of Beaujolais is also on the paths leading to Santiago de Compostela. At the crossroads of stunning views, history, and legends, Mont Saint-Rigaud stands out as one of the most beautiful natural getaways.
