Like every year, July 14 will turn Lyon into a grand theatre of republican celebrations. Commemorating both the storming of the Bastille in 1789 and the Federation Day of 1790, this day is primarily a tribute to the values of liberty, unity, and citizenship. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to shine a spotlight on those who ensure the safety of the inhabitants every day, from soldiers to firefighters, including law enforcement and first responders.
Bellecour to the rhythm of the armies and Rafales
Place Bellecour will become the beating heart of the festivities starting at 10 AM with the traditional military ceremony. People in Lyon will be able to witness the changing of the guard, the awarding of decorations, and the parade of numerous units representing the different branches of the armed forces and security. The 7th Material Regiment, the Gendarmerie, the 27th Alpine Infantry Brigade, and the 1st Regiment.

Just next door, the Village Défense will let you discover behind the scenes of security professions. Open from 9 AM to 2 PM, it will offer information booths, demonstrations, and an impressive exhibition of military vehicles, including the famous Grif.fon, Serval, Caesar, and VBCI. A full-size experience for the little ones and the big ones, plus dedicated spaces for army recruitment.
Flyover by Rafale and a XXL Fireworks Show at Fourvière
Eyes will then turn to the sky around 11:30 AM. Two Rafale jets from the Orange air base will fly over Place Bellecour in a passage that promises to send thrills throughout the entire peninsula. A highly anticipated moment that will add a spectacular touch to this patriotic morning.

The highlight of this National Celebration will undoubtedly be the traditional fireworks display from the Fourvière hill at 11 PM. Called SPECTRA, the fireworks show for this 2026 edition will last nearly 22 minutes and feature sixteen large, colorful displays celebrating color, energy, and light. As in recent years, the setup has been designed with eco-friendliness in mind, using cardboard projectiles, carbon offsetting, and a gradual increase in intensity to minimize disturbances for the birds on the hill.
Restrictions all around Lyon
As with every major event in Lyon, significant security measures will accompany the festivities. Bellecour Square will be closed to traffic from 8 AM to 2:30 PM and again from 7 PM to midnight. The Saint-Jean and Saint-Paul neighborhoods...l, Saint-Georges and the banks of the Saône will also have restrictions in the evening. Vehicle access to Fourvière will be prohibited from 7 PM, and the immediate area around the fireworks will be closed to pedestrians between 9 PM and 11:30 PM.

The Parc des Hauteurs will be closed from July 11 to 15, while the Jardin du Rosaire will be inaccessible on July 13 and 14. As for transportation, the metro will run normally, but several bus lines will be rerouted, and the funicular will stop service starting at 7:30 PM. Finally, many streets in downtown Lyon will be off-limits for parking until the middle of the night to ensure the festivities go smoothly.
