Barely arrived at Lavoûte-sur-Loire and you're already enchanted by the scenery: breathtaking wild landscapes, a charming little town, and proudly standing above it all, the castle of Lavoûte-Polignac. If you thought that only the castles of the Loire were postcard-worthy, think again! This one is simply the first pleasure castle built on the Loire, long before the likes of Chenonceau and its companions. A true pioneer, but with all the flair you’d expect from a historic fortress.

A historic castle worth visiting

This stone gem, built between the 10th and 12th centuries, expanded in the 13th century and then tastefully updated in the 16th and 17th centuries, was the stronghold of the very chic Polignac family. Eight centuries of history, just think about that! And let me tell you, it wasn't just for show in family portraits. Through its cozy salons, exquisite art pieces, precious archives, and carefully hung paintings, the castle tells the story of France at a human scale. Or rather, at the level of duchesses, marquises, and colorful characters who shaped this part of Auvergne.

The visit, which lasts about 45 minutes, literally transports you to another time. We start by walking through a well-tended Renaissance garden, and then we dive into a story where both small and big histories resonate with each other. All of this unfolds in a raw, natural setting, with the Loire River winding below, reminding us that this river, here, is still wild and free.

In short, it's the perfect getaway for lovers of heritage, nature, and breathtaking stories. The château is open for visits from April to November. And here's a little tip – at sunset, the view of the valley is simply stunning.
