Between Chaley and Plateau d'Hauteville, the Charabotte waterfall unveils itself in a wooded and green setting, perfect for nature lovers. Classified as a "natural monument of artistic character" since 1909, this 116-meter-high site (making it one of the highest waterfalls in France) is just 1 hour from Lyon. It serves as a refuge for various bird species, such as the raven and the peregrine falcon. In 2017, it was labeled as a Sensible Natural Area by the Ain Department, ensuring its preservation for future generations.Cascade de la Charabotte

A magical hike in every way

To reach the top of the Charabotte waterfall, a hike is essential. Along the way, the sound of the water gradually becomes louder, until the Albarine river appears, sparkling and crystalline. The spectacle is breathtaking: the Bugey mountains stretching as far as the eye can see, the rocks polished by time, and the delicate curves of the river suddenly plunging into the void. This is where the magic happens, transforming the peaceful river into a majestic and impetuous waterfall.

"Charabotte", what a funny name!

Why "Charabotte"? The legend says that one day, a cat with seven-league boots, famous for its intrepid crossings, slipped and fell into the flooded meadows of Chaley. A peasant, witness to the scene, exclaimed: "Look! The water has never been so high, the cat has water up to its boots!" To which the cat replied: "Every time you are flooded by the waterfall, call me, I will remove the water from the meadows with my boots." And thus the name "Charabotte" was born, from a rocambolesque fall and a pair of enchanted boots.
