Imagine a golden landscape, shaped by time and people, just a stone’s throw from the city. The Glay Quarries are a piece of open-air history, nestled in the heights of western Lyon. Mined since the 15th century for their unique yellow limestone – the famous golden stone that gives the Beaujolais its honeyed glow – they have long sculpted the surrounding villages. Today, they provide a perfect playground and a place for contemplation, just 40 minutes from Lyon, clock watching included!

From the esplanade, the view is breathtaking: rolling vineyards, a village steeple, a patchwork of golden houses… In one glance, you can take in 15 emblematic villages of Beaujolais. It's the kind of panorama that makes you want to put down your phone and truly soak it in. It’s no wonder this site is doubly blessed: Sensitive Natural Area for its thriving biodiversity, and UNESCO Global Geopark for its geological, educational, and aesthetic value. Just that alone.

An absolutely unique place around Lyon
But be careful, even the strongest treasures can be fragile. Due to landslides caused by heavy rains, part of the site is temporarily closed for safety reasons. No worries: the viewpoint is still accessible for free, and guided tours can still be booked in advance for groups. Great prices, stunning visuals!
