This Tuesday, March 11, Lyon's elected officials officially kicked off the transformation of the Part-Dieu woods, a project introduced as a “symbol” of the area's renaturation. Marion Sessiecq, mayor of the 3rd arrondissement, alongside Bruno Bernard and Grégory Doucet, announced the start of the changes that will turn this space, currently dominated by concrete and traffic, into something wonderful.
Over 3,000 plantings starting in March
The work will take place in several phases. The first phase, costing 2.7 million euros, will roll out until 2026 and will focus on the area between Boulevard Vivier-Merle and Rue Garibaldi. Starting this March, the first wave of plantings will take place: 73 trees, nearly 700 young plants, and over 2,300 shrubs. Once the second phase begins after 2026, the vegetation will spread across the France Télévisions site with no fewer than 14,000 additional young plants.

A construction site that will stretch until the end of the year
While we wait to enjoy this little slice of nature in the heart of the city, users will have to adjust to the new traffic changes. From now on, pedestrians and cyclists are being directed to temporary crossings. The construction will gradually move from the north to the south of the site until the end of 2025, changing the usual routes as the months go by.
This project is part of a larger initiative for greening spearheaded by the eco-friendly municipality. After the upcoming opening of the Martyrs of the Resistance Square and Mandela Park, Lyon continues to green its spaces to offer its residents a cooler and more pleasant city to live in. Great news for nature lovers... and those who feel stifled by the urban heat every summer!
