One of France's most famous squares, often criticized by the people of Lyon for its lack of shade and innovation, should become much greener by 2024! But the people of Lyon who voted massively for this project during the 2022 participatory budget may be a little disappointed. The City of Lyon has decided to settle for a "renaturation" at the foot of the already planted trees on the square, while temporary installations are expected to be set up while the final project vote will not take place until 2026.

The mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, has requested to add two elements to the city's greening project: an "artistic installation" and a temporary shade. The artistic installation, which will be placed on the western part of the city towards Old Lyon, aims to create a cool oasis. The shade, on the other hand, will be installed on the small path that crosses Place Bellecour. These two elements fall short of the forests desired by the people of Lyon, who criticize the insufficient greening project despite a budget of 1.5 million euros. Well, it's better than nothing! To see the new face of Place Bellecour, you'll need to be patient, as the works will only start in the second half of 2024, as our colleagues at BFM Lyo.n. Source: BFM Lyon.
