The Editor

The D line of the Lyon metro is about to undergo a transformation, and it’s going to be quite significant! SYTRAL Mobilités has just hit the “total modernization” button by approving the launch of contracts for the delivery of 26 brand new trains and a complete overhaul of the automated control systems. This marks the start of a massive project designed to last until 2035, which will greatly enhance the experience for users.

More comfort, reliability, capacity, and air conditioning on board

The beating heart of the Lyon metro, with over 300,000 daily passengers, the D line definitely deserved a makeover. And it won't be just a simple facelift: we’re talking about brand new MPL2NG trains, two-carriage designs on tires that are compatible with those on line B. The goal is to offer more comfort, more reliability, more capacity, and – a delightful surprise – air conditioning on board, which is sure to warm hearts… and cool down passengers in the heat of August!

Renewal of 125 Trains

But modernizing an automated metro without platform doors is also a significant technical challenge. Line D, a world pioneer in 1991 with its driverless operation, will need to adapt to new control technologies inspired by insights from Line B. All of this is part of a comprehensive strategy to renew 60% of the metro fleet by 2035, totaling 125 trains for the entire network. The cherry on top: the Thioley maintenance center will be expanded to keep pace.

The bill? 1.7 billion euros. A massive investment for a future metro that aims to be smoother, greener, and above all, worthy of a dynamic metropolis.
