The Editor

The Lyon metro's Line D is about to change its look, and not just a little! SYTRAL Mobilités has just hit the "total modernization" button, confirming the launch of contracts for the delivery of 26 brand new trains and the complete overhaul of the automatic control systems. This marks the beginning of a massive project, set to last until 2035, which will dramatically transform the user experience.

More comfort, reliability, capacity, and air conditioning on board

As the heart of the Lyon metro, with over 300,000 daily travelers, Line D has certainly earned its refreshing makeover. And it's not just a simple facelift: we're talking about brand new MPL2NG trains, with two cars on rubber wheels, compatible with those of Line B. The goal? More comfort, more reliability, more capacity, and – a delightful surprise – air conditioning on board, which will surely melt hearts… and passengers in the middle of August!

Renewal of 125 Trains

But modernizing an automatic metro without platform screen doors is also a major technical challenge. Line D, a worldwide pioneer back in 1991 with its driverless operation, will need to adapt to new control technologies inspired by the feedback from Line B. All of this is part of a comprehensive strategy to renew 60% of the metro fleet by 2035, which means 125 trains for the entire network. The cherry on the tracks: the Thioley maintenance center will be expanded to keep up with the pace.

The price tag? 1.7 billion euros. A massive investment for a metro of the future that aims to be smoother, greener, and above all, worthy of a bustling metropolis.
