Roofs that finally work!
The days of flat, lifeless roofs are over. Bruno Bernard, the president of Greater Lyon, has just introduced the new PLU-H (Local Urbanism and Housing Plan), which aims to transform the fate of roofs in Lyon. From now on, every new building over 10 m² must have a "useful" roof. But what do we mean by useful? Here are three options to choose from:
- Greening: roofs that turn into refreshing islands, perfect for combating urban heatwaves and welcoming back a biodiversity we thought was lost.
- Solar panels: so that our faithful friend, the Lyon sun, can provide green energy right on the spot.
- Accessibility: transform your roofs into terraces to enjoy the view and have drinks with your neighbors. Yes, that sounds delightful!
Towards a rooftop boom in Lyon?
While Lyon already has a few rooftops that bring joy to locals and tourists alike,we are still quite far from cities like Paris, Lisbon, or Madrid. With this reform, we can expect to see terraces popping up everywhere in the years to come. It's all about enriching the offerings for cocktail lovers with a view, outdoor yoga enthusiasts, and generally all those who enjoy contemplating the stunning Lyon skyline.
Beyond the aesthetic and lifestyle aspect, this initiative is part of a sustainable development approach: less concrete, more greenery, and a Lyon that truly honors its reputation as a pioneering city in ecological transition.
