According to information from Lyon Capitale, digital advertising screens, present in about a dozen Lyon metro stations, should be removed as early as March 2024. This major decision marks the end of an era deemed intrusive and energy-intensive by some. In total, 120 digital advertising displays will be dismantled. This action is part of the new Local Advertising Regulation (RLP) voted by environmentalists in June 2023, aiming to significantly reduce the presence of ads in the Lyon metropolitan area. A more respectful and pleasant public space The RLP adopted in 2023 has already made headlines by imposing major changes in the Lyon advertising landscape. In addition to removing intrusive digital screens in the metro, the regulation reduces the size. The new billboards are 4m² instead of the previous 10m². This ecological initiative also aims to prohibit advertising banners on construction sites, except for historic monuments, and restrict the use of promotional banners for companies working on the site. The goal is ambitious: a drastic reduction, between 60 and 90%, in the number of billboards throughout the Lyon metropolitan area. This announcement comes as the contract between Sytral Mobilités and Clear Channel, the operator of the screens, expires in 2024. The President of the Metropolis, Bruno Bernard, confirmed that this measure is part of the desire to redesign public spaces to make them more pleasant and environmentally friendly.
