Opened six years ago by a Franco-Japanese couple, Mubyotan might fly under the radar with its just 20 seats, but it’s precisely this discretion that gives it its charm. A cozy and tucked-away spot that boasts a lovely terrace to expand its space in the spring, adding a few tables to this intimate setting where the atmosphere remains as zen as in Japan. Because this place has a unique distinction in France: it is the only restaurant offering true, authentic traditional Japanese cuisine, also known as Washoku (in Japanese in the text).
The only Washoku restaurant in Lyon...and in France
So if Mubyotan is fully booked for lunch and dinner, it's mainly because of its amazing cuisine. Here, everything is homemade, and the menu changes every two weeks to surprise the regulars. It's hard to highlight specific dishes over others, but we can assure you that the marinated pork shoulder in red miso, sautéed and deglazed with sake (Buta no misodzuké yaki) is absolutely to die for, just like the Burgundy black chicken simmered with smoked bonito, bound with a beaten egg and served over rice (Oyako don). Dishes are beautifully plated as complete sets with vegetables and miso soup for only 16 euros. An unbeatable quality-price ratio!
A secret jealously kept
In the evening, the cuisine becomes even more refined, offering a tasting experience that gets close to perfection. For around fifty euros for two, you can enjoy a complete platter, along with a dessert, a glass of wine, and a beer, ensuring you leave with a full belly and a light heart. And even though the restaurant stays out of the media spotlight, regulars know better: Mubyotan is a must-visit for lovers of authentic Japanese cuisine.
