Nestled on the picturesque Place de la Trinité, right in the heart of the Saint-Georges neighborhood, Café du Soleil proudly boasts origins dating back to the 18th century. Its rare longevity makes it one of the oldest establishments in Lyon. Even back then, the place thrived with the lively performances of Guignol created by Laurent Mourguet, giving the café an almost theatrical vibe.

Café du Soleil takes no half-measures when it comes to cooking. The homemade quenelles, shaped by hand, are the undeniable star of the menu. Made with traditional recipes featuring pike, eggs, and calf fat, they offer an airy texture that comes close to perfection. Surrounding them are the beloved classics: Lyonnaise salad, tripe, and chicken liver parfait. All of this is enjoyed in a cozy bouchon atmosphere, where you come as much to eat as to experience something special.

A decor that blends heritage and cinema
The place is also a quiet witness to French cultural history. With its recognizable façade featuring a golden sun against a blue background, the Café du Soleil attracts both food lovers and history enthusiasts. In 1969, Jean-Pierre Melville filmed a scene from his cult classic Army of Shadows here. This cinematic touch adds another layer of myth to a spot already rich in stories.

Taken over in 1981 by Pascal Bonhomme, the restaurant has experienced a wonderful revival, especially since 2005 with the artisanal production of its quenelles. Even today, it remains a go-to spot for lovers of authentic Lyonnaise cuisine. With its terrace overlooking the Place de la Trinité, it's the perfect place to enjoy a bit of history… and, by the way, one of the best quenelles in the city.
