The best gamay on the planet simply comes from the Rhône. The 16th edition of the International Gamay Competition took place at the Palais des Congrès in Lyon, gathering 615 samples from around the world. After several rounds of highly precise tastings, only 11 bottles made it to the finals. The super jury's verdict: the gold medal goes to the Jean-Paul Ruet estate in Saint-Étienne-des-Oullières.

The real surprise is the price. According to the very reputable Guide Hachette des Vins, this award-winning bottle costs no more than 15 €. In other words, a wine crowned “best in the world” that you can proudly serve at a dinner with friends. A star of Beaujolais and Burgundy, gamay has made its way around the globe. Switzerland, Italy, California, South Africa, or Brazil: this grape variety has conquered all five continents. But it seems that it always feels at home here.
