The Editor

Starting from May 2, 2026, the Vaise library will temporarily close its doors to kick off a major renovation project estimated at nearly 4 million euros. For about 15 months, this iconic location in western Lyon, open since 2000, will reinvent itself from the ground up. The goal? To offer a more modern, more accessible space that’s much better suited to today's needs. Because yes, the library version 2026 is no longer just about books: it’s becoming a true cultural hub.

A Completely Redesigned Cultural Venue

More than just a facelift, this is a complete overhaul of the user experience. In its 2,200 m² open to the public, everything is set to evolve: improved air quality, modernization of energy systems, enhanced security… but most importantly, a new organization of the spaces. The collections – nearly 50,000 books and over 11,000 documents related to the performing arts – will be redistributed.

grouped into more readable thematic poles. New places will appear, including collaborative workspaces, a creative studio, and areas dedicated to artists. This transformation perfectly reflects the new expectations of users, blending culture, creativity, and sharing.

A service that's still going strong

During the renovations, several alternatives are being set up in the neighborhood and elsewhere in Lyon. Press spaces, reading points, library networks… everything is designed to ensure a continuous service. Even better, cultural activities are not going away: they're just moving around. Shows, workshops, and conferences will continue to bring life to the 9th arrondissement, proving that the media library never really goes quiet, even when under construction.

A last celebration before the big transformation

Before the jackhammers, it's party time! On April 25, 2026, the media library invites the people of Lyon to a festive day to say goodbye (for now) to the place. Karaoke, marching bands, dancing, and activities for young and old: a joyful way to celebrate together!

and to turn the page before writing a new one, even more ambitious. Because in Lyon, even the construction work knows how to put on a show...
