He smoked Gitanes, provoked French television, and wrote lyrics that everyone still knows by heart fifty years later. This summer, Serge Gainsbourg is coming to Lyon through an exciting exhibition that is sure to resonate with both nostalgic fans and lovers of French pop culture. Starting June 18, the Galerie MC2M will host “Serge Gainsbourg – Traits de génie,” a retrospective dedicated to the artist with a thousand faces. And clearly, this will not be a simple tribute exhibition hastily thrown together with a few vintage posters and framed vinyl records.
The public will be able to discover a true collection of original works showcasing Gainsbourg's life and creative journey: annotated manuscripts, crossed-out texts, photographs...
rare biographies and personal archives. An intimate dive into the bubbling brain of an artist who turned each of his obsessions into a cult masterpiece. An artist impossible to categorize
With Gainsbourg, everything overflows. Music, provocations, love stories, scandals, genius. And it’s precisely this elusive personality that the exhibition in Lyon seeks to express. An absolute nonconformist, Serge Gainsbourg crossed the decades like a fascinating anomaly in French culture. From “La Javanaise” to “Je t’aime… moi non plus,” not to mention “Initials B.B.” or his legendary reggae cover of La Marseillaise, the artist built a legacy that has become almost untouchable.

And yet, behind the image of the disillusioned dandy with a whisky glass always close by, there lay an immense worker. The exhibition emphasizes this lesser-known facet: that of an obsessive creator who spent his time writing, editing, composing, and reinventing his art.
From failed painter to absolute icon of French culture
Before becoming Gainsbourg, there was Lucien Ginsburg, a young painter convinced he would never succeed. Part of the exhibition revisits his beginnings in painting, a discipline he would give up by burning a large portion of his canvases. Then came the cabarets, the piano, the lyrics, and gradually the birth of the Gainsbourg persona. An instantly recognizable silhouette among thousands: crumpled suit, Repetto shoes, cigarette at the corner of his lips, and a tired gaze.u cult.
The exhibition also reminds us how deeply the artist has influenced several generations, both through his songs and his aesthetic. Thirty-five years after his death, Gainsbourg continues to inspire fashion, advertising, cinema, and a significant part of French pop culture. What's the most frustrating part of this story? The exhibition will only be available until August 29. In other words, it’s best not to put off the visit to "later," just like that message that’s been left unread for three weeks.
