Every year, the Institut Lumière turns visitors into true actors for a day. On the occasion of the anniversary of Factory Exit, filmed on March 19, 1895, in Lyon, a series of remakes take place throughout the day. The concept is simple and wonderfully effective: you step in front of the camera, reenact the iconic scene... and leave with your own version of the film. Yes, literally, you step into the history of cinema.
It's hard to be more symbolic. Behind Factory Release, we have the pioneers of cinema: Auguste Lumière and Louis Lumière. This short film, shot in front of their factory in Lyon, is considered one of the very first in the history of cinema. Replaying this scene today is like traveling back in time. It's a fun and accessible way to reconnect with the origins of cinema… without stepping into a dark room.
A free dive into the origins of cinema
The Lumière Institute opens its doors from 10 AM to 7 PM to welcome anyone wanting to experience it. Entry is free, at registration, but even if some slots are fully booked, you can still try your luck on-site in case of a cancellation. Whether you're going solo, with friends, or with family, the concept remains the same: join in on an express shoot, leave with your video, and casually say “I starred in a remake of the first film in history.” Not too shabby for a resume… or an Instagram story!

Once your scene is filmed, your movie is sent to you so you can keep it. A unique memory, halfway between a cultural experience and a fun moment. Over the years, these remakes have led to versions that are sometimes faithful, sometimes completely offbeat, but always full of life. A testament that more than 130 years later, the magic of cinema still works.
