According to a survey conducted by Preply, the online language learning site, on a sample of 1500 people between January and February 2024, "Biloute" proudly ranks 6th in the list of the most familiar regional expressions for French people. But what does "Biloute" exactly mean for the Ch'tis? It's simple: it's the equivalent of "guy" used in the rest of France. A relaxed and friendly way to address someone, which could be translated as "my buddy" or "dude."

The "Biloute" ch'ti conquering France

But why does this purely Ch'ti expression have so much success? Perhaps because it perfectly reflects the state of mind. Friendly and joyful atmosphere that reigns on the streets of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. An expression that naturally slips into conversations, much to the delight of those who use it and those who discover it.

When it comes to regional expressions, Marseille is clearly the reigning champion city. But don't count out Lille, as it proudly secures a spot in this regional ranking for our pure enjoyment!
