When we talk about charming villages in Hauts-de-France, some places still remain relatively undiscovered. Parfondeval is definitely one of those! Nestled in the heart of Thiérache, this small community of around a hundred inhabitants is proudly part of the very exclusive circle of “Most Beautiful Villages in France.” It's a title held by only two villages in the region: Gerberoy in Oise and Parfondeval in Aisne.

And right upon arrival, the setting makes a strong impression: red bricks, slate roofs, a central pond, and tranquil alleys create an almost timeless landscape.
A rural village that remains very authentic
In the center of the village, you can’t miss the large pond. In the past, it was used to water the animals from nearby farms during a time when agricultural activity dictated village life. Today, it stands as the last remaining of the six ponds that once existed in Parfondeval. Surrounding it, the typical houses of Thiérache (red bricks and slate roofs) give the village a strong identity. A simple yet charming architecture that contributes to this peaceful atmosphere. Another remnant of daily life from days gone by: the two washhouses of the village, still visible today and accessible all year round.
An Impressive Fortified Church
But the monument that catches everyone’s eye is the Saint-Médard Church. Built in the 16thth century, this fortified church features a keep and turrets, making it look almost like a little fortress. Inside, a displays recounts the history of the fortified churches of Thiérache, which is quite a unique heritage in this part of France. The visit is free all year round, allowing you to explore this historic site without any pressure. A Protestant temple dating back to 1858 also highlights the significance of the Protestant community in the region.

A nature getaway just two hours from Lille
Beyond the village itself, the landscape around Parfondeval is definitely worth the trip. Thiérache is known for its hedgerows, orchards, and rolling pastures. It's a lush setting that invites you to wander. Visitors can stroll along country paths, explore nearby villages, or simply enjoy the peaceful rural atmosphere. For those in Lille looking for a quiet escape, Parfondeval is one of those hidden gems to discover for a weekend.
