A monument forever marked by the Great War
But the fate of the towers doesn't stop there. When the First World War breaks out, their dominant position makes them a strategic observation post for the French troops. From their heights, they allow for monitoring the enemy lines set up on the side of Vimy and Notre-Dame-de-Lorette.
te. In 1915, German bombings hit the abbey hard. The upper floors of the towers were destroyed, reducing their height by several meters. The scars are still visible today and contribute to the very unique atmosphere of the place. Facing these two giants, mutilated by war, it's hard not to feel a bit dizzy.
