Barely back to school when you're already itching to get away? We might have just found the perfect excuse. Just an hour from Lille, Damme unfolds a delightfully Flemish setting in the heart of Belgian polders. A tiny historic city where you mainly come to walk, cycle, hunt for books, and watch boats drift gently by.
An old port turned peaceful haven
It's hard to imagine today that this quiet little town was once intimately linked to the power of Bruges. In the Middle Ages, Damme served as a transshipment port for the Flemish city, until the progressive silting of the Zwin. From this history remains remarkably rich heritage: a 15th-century Gothic town hall, the imposing Notre-Dame church, and a few charming old streets where time seems to have genuinely slowed down. But the landscape that immediately gives Damme its charm is just a few meters further: the Damse Vaart, this long straight canal lined with poplar trees

What if you arrived in Damme... by boat?
It's probably the most charming way to discover the village. From Bruges, the boat Lamme Goedzak gently navigates the canal all the way to the heart of Damme. For about 35 minutes, you can watch the polders and tall rows of poplars glide by before disembarking right in the little town. And September is just one of the last perfect months to take advantage of it. In 2026, the boat operates daily until October 4th, with several departures daily from both Bruges and Damme. Only a couple of exceptions to note in September: no crossings on September 4th and 5th (perfect timing for a yard sale, actually). It's definitely a far more romantic arrival than "taking exit 18 at the roundabout," we have to admit.
A mill perched along the canal
To complete the postcard picture, we obviously needed a mill. The Schellemolen stands right on the banks of the Damse Vaart. Built in 1867 on the site of an old mill, it was restored in
the 1970s and is still in working order. And here's great news for a September getaway : the mill opens to the public several more days, particularly on September 12, 19, 20 and 26, 2026, from 10am to 5:30pm. Damme is also… a city of books
Here's a detail many don't know: Damme has officially been a city of books since 1997. Yet its connection to literature goes back much further. In the 13th century, poet Jacob van Maerlant wrote several of his major works there, while Charles De Coster would later choose Damme as the setting for his novel about Till the Prankster. Even today, several bookstores and antiquarian booksellers keep this delightful literary tradition alive. Every second Sunday of the month, a book and art market also sets up in town. And in September, the timing is particularly perfect: the next one takes place Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 10am to 5pm, right on the market square. Admission is free.
Twelve kilometers on foot through the polders
To truly enjoy Damme, it's best to bring good walking shoes. A 12-kilometer hiking trail follows the canal before crossing the vast polder landscapes between Damme and Oostkerke. The itinerary
The itinerary notably passes through former dikes, the Romboutswerve nature reserve, the castle and the Oostkerke mill before returning toward the historic center. The route is entirely flat and well-marked. A particularly lovely walk at the end of summer, when the first colors of September gently begin to change the landscapes. The perfect getaway to stretch summer just a little longer
Damme has no world-famous monument or must-see attraction before heading home. And that's precisely what makes it so lovely. You come here to follow the canal, stop in front of the mill, browse at a bookshop, climb the church tower to admire the Zwin region, or simply settle onto a terrace before hitting the road again. At roughly 82 kilometers from Lille, or about an hour's drive in light traffic, Damme ticks all the boxes for the perfect back-to-routine escape: close enough to leave on a whim, far enough away to feel like you've stolen one last little day of vacation.
