The Northern Theater: the theater in the heart of the city

Located on the Grand Place, this historic theater in Lille was built in 1717 to house the royal bodyguard responsible for watching over the city (conquered by Louis XIV). While the facade remains unchanged, the building has housed the Saint-Nicolas Covered Market and, after World War I, a large hall, the Roger-Salengro room, named after a mayor of Lille. This vast space in the heart of the city served all functions until 1986, when Pierre Mauroy launched a colossal project that gave birth to the theater we see today, which houses a large hall of 440 seats and, underground, a small hall of 90 seats. Numerous theater plays are performed here throughout the year, discover the program.

Sébastopol Theatre: the most stylish theater in downtown

When the Grand Théâtre Lequeux burned down in 1903, the municipality asked architect Léonce Hainez to build a temporary theater in Lille within four months. The challenge was met and the audience then discovered a 2,000-seat hall with a ceiling painted with motifs of the era, lit by four chandeliers, and with the orchestra pit, almost at the level of the hall, clearly visible to the public. For better comfort, Sébastopol now only has 1,350 seats since 1998. To this day, the theater hosts shows by many comedians, singers, musicians, and ballets. Check out the schedule.
