A summer without trams? It's possible (but not without some effort)
On July 7, the trams quietly vanished without a sound or horn. The reason? A massive modernization of the network in preparation for the shiny new tramway set to launch in 2026. This is the final big push to refresh platforms, tracks, poles, overhead lines, and signals. It's a solid project, packed into two months for speed, minimizing hassles, and avoiding service cuts right in the middle of autumn.
The 36 stations are getting a makeover : more accessible, more comfortable, and greener too, with some areas set to be landscaped. The Roubaix–Tourcoing line will see a complete replacement of 4 km of track and 12,000 cross ties. And to cover all bases, 530 electrical consoles are being refurbished, while 10 poles are moving to safer spots for improved track security.

Shuttle buses… but not without a hitch!
In theory, Ilévia provides the replacements with buses that follow the usual routes, run at the same intervals, and stop (almost) everywhere. In practice, passenger feedback is already highlighting some concrete challenges: overcrowded buses from the morning, longer journeys, repeated delays, and stations that are either no longer served or relocated, making daily life even trickier.
This is particularly true for the Jean Moulin, Foch, or Lille Europe stops in certain directions, which are simply no longer served by the shuttle buses. Others, like Faidherbe or Planche Epinoy, have been moved a few meters… which can be enough to confuse you when you’re already in a hurry.

Ilévia promises support and some solutions
To ensure travelers aren’t completely left in the lurch, agents will be deployed all summer long on the ground, equipped with route plans, pedestrian signage, and enhanced wayfinding. And to encourage other modes of transport, the V'lille service has been strengthened, making it easier for those who prefer to pedal instead of waiting around.
But even with all these good intentions, it’s hard to deny that this interruption comes right in the middle of daily commutes for those working in July. A necessary evil for brand-new lines come fall, sure… but not without a bit of sweat.

When is the return of the trams?
The network will officially be back in service on September 1st, following a series of empty tests starting August 28th. Until then, it's a good idea to take precautions, leave a bit earlier, or consider biking as your best buddy.
From July 7 to August 31, 2025
Network affected : Tramway lines Lille ↔ Roubaix / Tourcoing
Service resumption planned for September 1st
