The recipe for the famous Northern Christmas scallop shell

For a large pastry to share:

Ingredients:

  • 700 g of flour
  • 150 g of butter
  • 60 g of sugar
  • 25 cl of milk
  • 25 g of baker's yeast
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 pinch of salt

Preparation:

Dissolve the yeast in some warm milk (not all of it). Melt the butter in the rest of the milk. Mix the flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Add the yeast, beaten eggs, and the mixture of milk and melted butter. Mix with a whisk or mixer until you have a smooth and elastic dough. You can add sugar pearls or chocolate chips. Shape a.Mix a homogeneous dough. Cover it with a towel and let it rest for at least 1 hour, in a warm place, until it has doubled in size. Then, shape the dough into a shell so that it looks like a swaddled baby. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Once the dough has risen well, brush it with an egg yolk. Add some sugar pearls for decoration on the top. Bake in the oven at 200°C for 30 min on the middle rack.
