Yes, you read that right! While extreme temperatures are generally associated with the Sahara or the Middle East, France is currently one of the hottest places on the planet. And the North is definitely not escaping this heatwave!

Unusual Heat Even Up North

This Wednesday, Lille is expected to reach 35°C, with temperatures still above the seasonal norms and, especially, nights that remain particularly stuffy. The thermometer is not expected to drop below 24°C at night, making sleep difficult for many residents.  And the most impressive part? France is currently among the hottest regions in the world. According to several meteorologists, less than 1% of the planet is experiencing higher temperatures than those recorded this week in certain French regions.

A Historic Heatwave

The numbers...It's dizzying! France has just experienced its hottest day since modern weather records began, with temperatures locally exceeding 44°C in some regions. Experts are now boldly comparing this episode to the major heatwaves of 2003 or 2019. Météo-France even refers to it as an intense and prolonged episode, with heat levels rarely seen so early in the season. The North and Pas-de-Calais have been placed on red heatwave alert, a clear indication of the exceptional nature of the situation.

Why is it so hot ?

The responsible party has a name that sounds almost scientific: the dome of heat. Essentially, a very hot mass of air has settled over much of Europe, blocking cooler air from circulating. The result: day after day, the heat accumulates, and temperatures keep rising. The phenomenon is even harder to bear since the nights are also very warm. It's precisely the absence of coolness at night that wears us out the most.

A little break in sight ?

Fortunately, forecasts suggest a gradual decrease in temperatures over the next few days, bringing back some more breathable air to parts of the country. Even though the thermometer is likely to remain quite summery, the worst of this heatwave seems to be slowly fading away.  In the meantime, it's best to stick to the usual safety tips.

sp;: drink regularly, limit efforts during the hottest hours, and seek out some coolness as soon as possible. And if you're looking for an idea, just a little reminder that the municipal pools in Lille, Lomme, and Hellemmes are now accessible for 1 € all summer long. That's pretty awesome, right?
