September, that wonderful month when you simultaneously rediscover your alarm clock, traffic jams, school bags, and that strange feeling of having forgotten how your commute to work actually works. And this year, back-to-school season in Lille comes with a few extra surprises. Starting with a major reorganization of the Ilévia bus network, which came into effect this Monday, August 31st. On the schools side, several measures are also helping ease the financial burden on families, while the first days of the month will be marked by the Braderie and its significant traffic restrictions. The bus network changes starting August 31st
It's probably the most important change of this back-to-school season in the Lille metropolitan area. As of August 31st, 2026, Ilévia is rolling out a heavily revamped bus network. The number of lines is thus increasing from 140 to 153, with new routes, new lines, increased frequencies, and revised numbering across part of the network. The stated objective
is notably to facilitate connections with the metro, tram, and TER train stations. In Lille, several areas are directly affected, particularly Old Town Lille, Euratechnologies, Lomme and Hellemmes. Among the main new features, a new Citadine Mons-Hellemmes is making its debut. It connects the Hellu-Épine industrial zone to Fives, with a bus every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 20 minutes during off-peak hours. Flexity makes its debut in the metropolis
Another name to remember: Flexity. This is the new name given to Ilévia's on-demand transport service, designed in particular to complement regular routes in outlying areas. The system now features 30 virtual lines, including 10 new ones, allowing you to book a trip between certain bus stops and a metro station or TER train station. The service operates during the day and also in the evening. The new network also introduces or strengthens different line families, including Express routes designed to offer more direct routes, as well as City lines and services dedicated to business zones. All of which will require a few days of adjustment before the new numbers finally stick in our heads.
And no, no general metro shutdown announced
Important clarification: contrary to some information that circulated last summer, no interruption
general of the Lille metro is not announced by Ilëvia for this back-to-school season. The two lines continue to run as usual. The changes planned as part of the new transport contract notably include extended operating hours, with the metro starting from 5am and, on Saturday evenings, line 2's end of service aligned with line 1. The advice remains the same this back-to-school season : check your route before you leave, especially if it includes a connection with a bus line whose route or number has changed.Ilëvia fares have also gone up this summer
It's not technically a September novelty, but your wallet is most likely to notice it around back-to-school time : Ilëvia fares have increased since August 1st, 2026. The single ticket notably rose from €1.80 to €1.90, while the SMS ticket now costsis 2.10 €. The ten-trip booklet reaches 16.60 €, compared to 15.80 € previously, and the day pass has increased from 5.50 € to 5.70 €. On the subscription side, the general public monthly pass now costs 67 €, while the permanent monthly subscription goes up to 58.50 €. The Zap trip remains fixed at 1.20 €.
At school, school supplies remain free for over 11,000 students
The school year will begin this Tuesday, September 1st and, for the sixth consecutive year, school supplies for students in Lille's public primary schools will be covered by the City. The measure concerns over 11,000 children spread across 80 public schools in Lille. The municipality announces dedicating 126.3 million euros to education in its 2026 budget. School meal rates will not be increased for this school year.
The cafeteria becomes automatically free for certain families
This is the other major change in September for Lille families. Until now, 9.5% of children in Lille, Lomme and Hellemmes benefialready benefited from free meals upon request from a social worker. Starting this school year, free school meals become automatic for households with a family quotient between 0 and 264. It may also be granted, upon request from a social worker, to families with a quotient between 265 and 404. The City is also introducing specific rates for single-parent families concerning school, after-school and extracurricular services.
The Braderie will transform traffic starting the first weekend in September
The Braderie de Lille 2026 will take place on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6, and will bring about, as every year, a major change in traffic in the city center. Traffic and parking will be prohibited within the Braderie perimeter from Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m. to Monday, September 7 at 1 a.m. Parking will even be forbidden on the affected roads starting Friday at 1 a.m. The V'Lille stations located within the perimwill also be closed during the event. A secure, monitored bike parking area will instead be set up at Place François-Mitterrand, between Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe.

Several construction projects continue to shape the way around
Back to school certainly doesn't make those orange barriers magically disappear! Several development and landscaping projects are ongoing across different neighborhoods in Lille, with occasional changes to traffic flow and parking. In Saint-Maurice Pellevoisin, for example, construction work is still underway juuntil September 21st on Rue Alphonse-Leroy. Other work projects are scheduled or continuing in various parts of the city, with the municipality regularly updating its construction site summary. Another thing to keep in mind: the summer pedestrianization of certain streets continues for a good part of the month. Rue des Bouchers is notably one of the affected areas until September 28th, with varying hours depending on the day.
A 2026 back-to-school season that's reshuffling the deck above all on mobility
No major upheaval on September 1st, then, but a series of changes that could still shake up some habits. The main highlight remains clearly the new Illévia bus network, whose reorganization affects the entire metropolitan area. In Lille itself, the back-to-school season will also be marked by new measures for families, the continuation of construction work, and of course, a first September weekend where the entire city will live to the rhythm of mussels and fries, great deals, and kilometers covered on foot.
