In Lille, the new green spaces aren’t always visible from the main streets. However, tucked away behind a small alley between Turenne and Bassée streets, there’s now a true haven of nature right in the city center. The Charité Park, open to the public since July 2025, has settled into the former garden of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. A portion of this vast area has been purchased by the city with a simple idea: to offer a new green space to the residents of the Vauban-Esquermes neighborhood.

A discreet garden turned green oasis right in Lille

It’s hard to imagine, as you walk through the Saint-Joseph alley, that such a space exists here. Yet, behind those walls, 6,000 m² of lawn, trees, and quiet nooks unfold for a little breather. The place has been designed as a calm park, far from the urban hustle and bustle. In the large central meadow, one can...

find tables for picnicking, benches, and some natural play areas, such as a cabin or a trunk from a tree rescued after a storm, perfect for climbing and exploring. The idea wasn’t to create a traditional playground, but rather a space where nature remains at the heart of the landscape.

A garden inspired by the history of the place

Before reaching the large lawn, visitors stroll through a “Herb Garden”, created along the old convent. Here, you’ll find aromatic, medicinal, and culinary plants, nodding to the monastic traditions. For centuries, these gardens were used to grow the necessary plants for making remedies. A subtle detail that reminds us that this park has a history far older than its recent opening to the public.

A little refuge for biodiversity in the heart of the city

The park isn’t just a pleasant spot for the locals. It has also been designed as a refuge for local wildlife and plants. No less than 1,500 m² of the site are reserved as a protected area, where nature can thrive undisturbed. A pond has been created there…nests and shelters need to be installed. Among beeches, magnolias, yews, and fruit trees, the park almost feels like a tiny urban forest. With a bit of luck, some visitors might even catch a glimpse of the tawny owl that has made its home in the trees.

Lille continues to green its neighborhoods

The opening of the Parc de la Charité is part of a larger initiative by the City: to create or develop 90 hectares of green spaces by 2026. With this new garden, the Lille metropolitan area is continuing its transformation into a greener and more breathable city, especially in very urban neighborhoods like Vauban-Esquermes. And for the local residents, this little hidden park has become the perfect spot to read, picnic, or simply enjoy a bit of fresh air.
