We knew Lille's University Hospital was particularly renowned in France. It seems we now need to look much further afield. In the latest ranking of the world's best hospitals, published by Newsweek with Statista, Claude-Huriez Hospital has secured the 34th place worldwide. And on a French scale, only two establishments rank better.

Lille University Hospital clinches 34th place worldwide

Every year, American magazine Newsweek and Statista publish their World's Best Hospitals ranking, designed to distinguish the most highly-rated hospital establishments around the world. For this 2026 edition, more than 50,000 hospitals were evaluated. In total, 2,530 establishments from different countries were recognized, and the top 250 appear in the global ranking. And Lille is clearly not just making up the numbers. Lille University Hospital – Claude-Huriez Hospital

it appears at the 34th place worldwide, right behind the Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli in Rome and ahead of the Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich. Out of over 50,000 facilities evaluated, that makes for rather prestigious neighbors on Professor-Jules-Leclercq Boulevard.

And it becomes the 3rd best French hospital in the ranking

On a national scale, the result is equally impressive. Claude-Huriez Hospital is the third-best ranked French facility in the 2026 world ranking. Ahead of it, there are only two Parisian establishments: Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital, ranked 11th worldwide, and European Hospital Georges-Pompidou, which comes in at 32nd. Lille University Hospital outranks notably the Pellegrin hospital group at Bordeaux University Hospital, 69th, Santé Atlantique in Saint-Herblain, 78th, and Paris Saint-Joseph Hospital, 98th. A small caveat all the same: Claude-Huriez held 26th place worldwide in the previous editiontooth and therefore drops eight places in 2026. Its presence in 34th place nevertheless keeps it very high in the World Top 250 established by Newsweek and Statista.

But how are the "world's best hospitals" selected?

Because obviously, no one sent a jury to sleep discreetly in a few thousand hospital rooms. The ranking is based on several criteria. Statista notably indicates having surveyed more than 100,000 healthcare professionals, to which are added data relating to patient satisfaction, hospital quality indicators as well as a survey on the implementation of PROMs, indicators that allow patients to evaluate themselves the results of their care. You should therefore consider this ranking for what it is: an international ranking

ranked according to a methodology specific to Newsweek and Statista, and not an absolute measure of the quality of each hospital or each department. An important clarification, especially when it comes to health.

More than 16,000 professionals and 1.4 million patients per year

Behind this 34th place lies above all quite a hospital giant. Lille University Hospital has 16,291 professionals and 3,246 beds and available spaces. Approximately 1.4 million patients are treated there each year, for both local care and serious conditions requiring highly specialized equipment and expertise.  As a university hospital, the CHU also plays an important role in medical education and research, welcoming 3,840 students on its campus. It is a leading establishment for the approximately 6 million inhabitants of the Hauts-de-France region.   And the facility is currently multiplying technological investments. Last April, for example, the CHU inaugurated a 7 Tesla MRI, intended for the care ofpatients but also to research in the Hauts-de-France region.

A recognition that goes beyond this sole global ranking

This international result echoes other recent rankings. In France, the Lille University Hospital also holds third place in the 2026 Le Point hospital rankings, a position it has maintained for several years.  Two different methodologies, then, but a shared finding: the Lille establishment continues to appear among the best-ranked hospitals in France. As for the Newsweek and Statista global ranking, it places Lille this year between Rome and Munich. We already had the waffles, the braderie and the Grand'Place. We can apparently add a hospital ranked 34th worldwide to the list of things Lille can quietly boast about.
