When you think of exceptional cheese, places like Auvergne, Savoie, or Normandy come to mind. But this year, the supreme title took an unexpected turn. At the highly competitive International Contest of Lyon 2026, a Belgian cheese won everyone over—even in the land known for cheese excellence.

A World Title Earned Near the Border

It was Fromagerie Groendal, located in Rumbeke, West Flanders, that created the surprise. Their cheese called Ancienne Belgique, a cow's milk Gouda aged for ten months, scored the perfect 100/100. This incredibly rare achievement earned it the title of best cheese in the world 2026. The International Contest of Lyon is no small affair. Over 2,200 cheeses from 23 countries competed, tasted blind by 630 judges. So, securing first place is truly an impressive feat.

What Won Over the Jury

This Belgian gouda has made a mark thanks to its masterfully achieved balance. Aged for ten months, the Ancienne Belgium develops a more intense flavor than classic goudas, while maintaining a soft and creamy texture. It also features fine crystals, a sign of advanced maturation, adding a delightful crunch that is highly appreciated on the palate. This cheese is generous, elegant, and perfectly crafted, managing to charm a jury that is used to very high-level references.

A Symbolic Victory on French Soil

The recognition is even more flavorful since it was achieved in France, at the country’s largest cheese competition. At the Groendal cheese factory, the news was initially received with disbelief. The producers even had to check that the mention “World’s Best Cheese” was real!

» was not only about the best Belgian cheese… but truly the best cheese of the competition across all categories. On social media, the team talks about “an immense pride” and “an honor for a Belgian cheese” to be crowned in Lyon.

When the best cheese in the world is almost from Lille

For the food lovers in the metropolis, the great news is the proximity. Rumbeke is located less than an hour from Lille, making the tasting much more accessible than a trip to the other end of the country. For now, the cheese is still produced in limited quantities. The cheese factory plans a gradual rollout, with a wider presence in shops throughout 2026. It’s safe to say that it’s likely to quickly become one of the stars of cheese boards… including in Lille.
