A network getting modernized for the future

Since 2023, the MEL has launched a massive tramway modernization plan. The goal: to set the stage for these next-generation trams, designed to meet the increasing mobility needs. More space on board, better accessibility, and technical performance: the tram of 2026 aims to be both faster and more convenient.

Longer and More Accessible Platforms

To welcome these new trains, fifteen platforms have been extended, raised, and upgraded to meet accessibility standards. New shelters have popped up everywhere, and some stations have even gone green, like at Croisé Laroche, Brossolette, and Romarin, featuring landscaped tracks and platforms. It's a refreshing makeover for a network that truly needed it.

A Massive Project on the Roubaix Line

The Roubaix line has undergone a real facelift: 7 km of tracks replaced, 20,000 tons of ballast, and 12,000 sleepers delivered by boat, an art structure renovated in Croix, and a maintenance center in Rouges Barres completely modernized (including a brand-new washing machine). This is a deep renovation to ensure reliability for years to come.

Get Ready for 2026 (and 2028)

The first Alstom train is set to roll out by the start of the 2026 school year. And by 2028, residents of Lille will enjoy a significantly improved frequency, designed to accommodate the steady increase in the number of passengers. These are ambitious plans for a project estimated at 59 million euros, with over half funded by the State and the European Union.

First new trains: start of the 2026 school year
Enhanced frequency: starting in 2028
Total budget: 59 M€ excluding tax (31 M€ in State + EU grants)
