The Editor

Founded in 2014, Wally's Coffee is one of those places that instantly comes to mind when talking about brunch in Lille. Generous freakshakes, decadent cookies, creative pastries, and a canteen inspired by Senegal… this spot has truly made its mark, standing out from the typical coffee shops.

A decision made "with clarity"

The news broke on January 15, 2026, through a message posted by its founder, Waly Ndong. After going through judicial recovery last autumn and attempting a comeback, the entrepreneur has ultimately requested the judicial liquidation of the establishment.

In his message, he doesn’t beat around the bush: continuing the business “no longer made sense or viability.” The reason? A build-up of challenges that many merchants in Lille can relate to.

Construction, crisis, and an impassable street

Waly Ndong especially points out the three years of construction on Rue du Molinel, which began after Covid. It was a long, burdensome project that significantly altered traffic and complicated access to the neighborhood for customers.

The street, although renovated, has never regained its previous foot traffic. On top of that, there are the lingering effects of the health crisis, inflation, and rising costs of goods and services.Energy costs and the repayment of loans taken out to keep the business afloat. A cocktail that has become too heavy for an independent shop, even one that's well established.

A coffee shop & a place to live

Over the years, Wally's Coffee has established itself as a true Lille landmark. Students, entrepreneurs, creatives, families… people came together not only to eat but also to work, chat, or simply take some time to relax.

In his message, the founder emphasizes the collective aspect of the project: teams, stories…tisan partners, a vision. “Wally’s Coffee existed. I carried it with all my strength,” he writes, without excessive nostalgia but with plenty of clarity.

A closure within a larger context

The disappearance of Wally’s Coffee doesn’t stand alone. In recent months, Lille has seen several iconic places close their doors, such as Kolor, Solange, Marguerite, Artchives, and also Grand-Scène & Cap Sauvage for example. This phenomenon echoes the ongoing challenges faced by independent businesses, already discussed in our previous articles.

Even highly frequented places with a strong identity and loyal clientele are finding it hard to withstand the successive economic blows.

The next chapter is written elsewhere

However, there’s no talk of an end to the adventure. Waly Ndong asserts: he continues to venture forward, “in a...tremendous, more understated, more just”. He is already at the helm of Fii, a boutique and coffee shop dedicated to African coffee, which opened in September 2025 in the Cormontaigne neighborhood.

Wally's Coffee may close its doors, but its spirit (bold, generous, independent) will live on in the memories of food lovers in Lille. And maybe that's what truly defines a real institution.
