1. In 2026, the Grand’Place is all about pedestrians

Four years of trials, months of chatter, and finally... the long-awaited verdict: the Grand’Place in Lille will be pedestrian-friendly starting January 12, 2026. A big "yes" from 74% of voters sealed the fate of the famous "extended pedestrianization." Just a heads up, cyclists, you'll need to take it easy!

2. Why this revolution?

More calm, more greenery, more space... The people of Lille have spoken! The idea is: fewer cars, more safety, and finally, lungs set free. Honestly, between enjoying spring terraces and snapping tourist selfies in front of the Goddess, we were starting to feel a bit stuck.

3. And what about our beloved cars?

No need to panic, Lille is thinking about its drivers too. The parking at Grand’Place with its 317 spots will remain accessible, and over 7500 spaces are within a 10-minute walk. Plus, the City plans to enhance signage to guide visitors. Brunching, shopping, wandering around—it’s all possible without stressing about parking.

Bikes and scooters, yes, but...

Here, the pedestrian is king. Cyclists and scooter riders will be able to cross the Grand’Pl.ace, but be careful, "à l’allure du pas". No more sprinting between the Goddess and the Furet du Nord !

5. A gentle change

To avoid general panic, the pedestrianization will happen gradually, starting in January 2026. Deliveries and residents will have authorized access from 7 AM to 11 AM, and temporary access can be requested for moving or construction. A smooth transition, even for the most reluctant.

6. Pedestrian Grand'Place: a new face for Lille

The city hall is preparing a campaign to educate everyone about this new Lille. Grand'Place will become a true gathering place for strolling, shopping, or enjoying a drink on a terrace. A greener, more inviting Lille... A Lille that we love even more.

Implementation: starting Monday, January 12, 2026
Areas affected: Grand'Place, rue du Curé Saint-Étienne, entrances to Esquermoise and Pierre Mauroy streets
