With a gradual transformation to pedestrian zones, development of soft mobility, and a desire to make the city center more peaceful, Lille is already undergoing many urban changes. This time, the city is aiming even higher with an unprecedented experiment: turning the city into a space almost entirely reserved for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport from Friday evening to Sunday midnight.

A car-free city from Friday 8 PM to Sunday evening

According to initial information, the trial phase is set to begin in May 2026. Starting from every Friday at 8 PM, the circulation of private vehicles would be suspended within Lille until midnight on Sunday. Only residents with special permits, emergency vehicles, taxis, ride-hailing services, public transport, and essential delivery services would still be allowed to circulate. The goal is clear: to significantly reduce noise pollution, improve air quality, and reclaim space for everyone.

the residents the weekend.

A measure designed to "reinvent urban rhythm"

From the city's perspective, this experiment would be presented as a new step in the transformation of Lille. The idea is to allow residents to reclaim public space: expanded terraces, bike rides, pedestrian paths, neighborhood activities, and temporary markets could multiply in streets freed from traffic. Several major roads in the center, from Vieux-Lille to Wazemmes, would then turn into vast urban strolls.

Arnaud Deslandes would have approved the test

According to initial information, Mayor Arnaud Deslandes would personally support this experiment, presenting it as “a new way to live in the city for a weekend”.

The municipality would already be mentioning...à indicators to monitor air quality, noise, and store attendance to gauge the real impact of the measure. This means the announcement is likely to make both cycling enthusiasts and parking space lovers react.

A first that could inspire other cities

If the experiment works, Lille could become the first major French city to implement car-free weekends across the entire municipality. A model that might then inspire other metropolises facing similar issues of traffic, pollution, and quality of life. We'll just have to see if the people of Lille are ready to trade in their cars for a pair of sneakers every Saturday morning.
