Every summer, it's a bit of the same ritual: while some are packing their bags, the diggers are settling into the Lille metropolis. The goal? To take advantage of the calmer traffic to make progress on the big construction projects before September rolls back around. Good news: the summer of 2026 looks to be less complicated than in previous years for the metro and tram. However, some roadways might seriously test your patience.
The metro is finally breathing... but still under watch
After several summers marked by interruptions due to the arrival of new trains on line 1, things are finally calming down. Both metro lines will continue to operate normally all summer long. The MEL is still making final adjustments to the new automatic control system. The result? A few slowdowns or occasional adjustments may happen on line 1, but no major closures are announced. Good news for everyone who had gotten used to it.
check their route three times before leaving. The biggest construction project of the summer is taking place on the A1
If there’s one area to avoid as much as possible this summer, it’s the A1 motorway. Starting from July 9 until mid-August, there will be road renovation works happening between Ronchin and Lezennes, heading Lille → Paris. The schedule includes regular night closures, some ramps temporarily closed, significantly slowed traffic, and a high risk of traffic jams, especially during rush hours. Detour routes will be set up for the entire duration of the work, but it's best to plan ahead (a lot ahead) if you need to use this route.
The RN356 will remain tricky until the end of July
Another point to be cautious about: the Urban Expressway (RN356). The works that started in early June will continue until July 26 towards Belgium → Lille, involving a complete renovation of the roadway. Closures will mainly occur at night, between 9 PM and 6 AM, but several weekends will also be affected.
The tram is running almost as usual
A nice surprise this year : unlike previous summers, there are no complete stops in the tram network planned. With the major modernization works now behind us, only a few localized maintenance operations might cause slight slowdowns on certain segments of the two lines. So for regular commuters, this summer should be much more relaxed.
Major urban projects continue to transform Lille
In parallel with the major roadways, several development operations are still ongoing in Lille. The area around boulevard de Metz, the Saint-Sauveur neighborhood, and several new projects...Public amenities and green spaces will be under construction all summer long. These works will mainly lead to some local traffic adjustments without causing major closures in the city center. In other words: there might be a few detours now and then, but nothing compared to those big roadworks.
What to remember before you go
To sum up, public transportation should provide a relatively smooth summer, with the metro and tram running almost normally. However, drivers will need to pay special attention to two areas: A1, which will see the most disruptions until mid-August, and RN356, which will be regularly closed at night until the end of July. A quick glance at your GPS before you head out could save you some precious degrees of patience.
