There are the new hotspots we keep an eye on for weeks. And then there are the ones that were already there long before us, to the point of becoming part of the scenery. Just a few meters from the Grand'Place, Le Voltaire clearly belonged to the second category. With its delightfully retro interior, its crêpes and galettes, and its terrace set up on rue Nationale, the café glided through the decades without really chasing trends. Yet this summer, the shutters came down one last time.
Le Voltaire had been located on rue Nationale since 1973
The story goes back more than half a century. Official records show the establishment was created on January 1st, 1973, with business activity starting that same year. Since then, its address never changed: 12 rue Nationale, right in the heart of Lille, just steps away from Rihour and the Grand'Place. For over 50 years, Le Voltaire watched countless

Because those who knew Le Voltaire will probably remember the decor just as much as what was on the plate. The establishment had preserved a very 60s-70s atmosphere, regularly noted by passing customers. Banquettes, furnishings and old-fashioned café vibes gave the address a charm that had become quite rare in a downtown where concepts sometimes succeed each other at breakneck speed. On the menu side, the place had notably become known for its traditional crêpes and galettes, but also offered salads, croque-monsieurs, sandwiches, desserts and hot drinks. The place worked just as well for lunch as for a coffee break or a crêpe in the afternoon. No neon designed for Instagram, no blue latte or 400g cookiewomen. And ultimately, that was perhaps precisely why we loved it.
A discreet closure after more than half a century
The end was much more low-key than the longevity of the establishment. According to Lille actu, Le Voltaire definitively closed its doors at the end of July 2026, after being placed in judicial liquidation. Dining platforms now also list the establishment as closed. Administrative records consulted at the end of August still showed the company as legally active, while mentioning an ongoing collective procedure. An administrative delay that doesn't change the reality on Rue Nationale: the café no longer welcomes customers. And with it disappears one of the oldest addresses in this part of downtown.
A new Lille institution takes its bow
This closure comes during a particularly turbulent period for Lille businesses. SeveralSeveral historic or well-established addresses have recently announced their closure, including the Joker, an emblematic cocktail bar in Old Lille that will serve its final drinks on September 26th. But the disappearance of the Voltaire tells a somewhat different story. 53 years of existence at the same location represent quite a slice of Lille's life. Some probably had student coffees there before returning years later with their own children. Others simply passed by every week thinking the Voltaire would always be there.
