Sometimes it feels like you have to cross all of France to find a truly unique place. However, just a few kilometers from Boulogne-sur-Mer, a path winds through a landscape that feels almost timeless: the Denacre valley, a little paradise nestled between Wimereux and Wimille.

A peaceful valley between river and meadows

As soon as you arrive in the valley, the scenery changes. The winding road gently plunges into a bucolic landscape, where the lush pastures, old stone farms, and orange rooftops create a picture-perfect postcard scene. The starting point of the walk is near an old tavern, almost hidden under ivy. Right next to it, a small waterfall murmurs at the foot of the trees, like an invitation to slow down. The path then follows the Denacre stream, a tributary of the Wimereux, and crosses the valley through woods, meadows, and clearings.

A simple and delightful stroll

The walk is taken at a leisurely pace, either on foot or by bike, following the flow of the water. You cross a small wooden bridge, pass by pastures where cows graze, and occasionally meet a few hikers searching for a moment of tranquility. As you walk, the scenery gently changes. Here a clearing, there a little woods, and further along an old stone building that reminds you of the area's rural past. Time seems to almost stand still.

A place rich in stories and legends

The Denacre valley is not only beautiful, but it also carries a remarkable history. For centuries, several water mills dotted the stream. The oldest dates back to the Middle Ages, when the Counts of Boulogne were already harnessing the power of the water. Later on, the area saw soldiers from the Boulogne camp during Napoleon’s time, who nicknamed the place the happy valley. Taverns welcomed travelers and soldiers who came through.

to rest between two campaigns. Even Victor Hugo talked about the landscapes of Boulonnais when he traveled the road between Boulogne and Calais, fascinated by the hills and valleys that seem to plunge into the sea.

A nature escape just steps from the sea

The stroll often ends near Wimille, where the path connects with the village and the bike trail. From there, you have two options: continue into the village center or climb up high to enjoy a spectacular view of the English Channel and the landscapes of Boulonnais. With the river, hills, and vast maritime horizons, the Denacre valley gives you that rare feeling of being far away from it all… even though you're only 1.5 hours from Lille.
