Forget the red velvet seats and the traditional movie screen. In Lille, a cultural venue is offering quite a stunning experience: films projected all around you, from floor to ceiling. Its name? L'hybride, a place well-known to short film lovers, which underwent a spectacular transformation in 2026.
A 360° immersive cinema in the heart of Lille
Located on rue Gosselet, L'hybride became last March the first immersive video mapping theatre in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. Here, images don't stay politely in front of viewers. They invade all four walls, the floor and even the ceiling, completely transforming the space as the films play. To achieve this result, the venue equipped itself with 18 laser video projectors and an immersive sound system with 13 speakers and two subwoofers. And unlike large temporary immersive exhibitions, L'hybride offers several screenings each week, with programming that evolves over the months.

From the ocean depths to hypnotic illusions
To discover the concept, three programs are currently offered to the public. With ABYSSES – Echoes of the Oceans, dive down to the seabed for a 40-minute journey through four short films. Between fish ballets, sunken cities and abstract creations, this program suitable from age 8 is perfectPerfect for a first experience. Want to feast your eyes? ILLUSIONS should do the trick. Eight abstract short films, light plays, hypnotic shapes and an electronic soundtrack come together to create a particularly intense visual experience, recommended from age 10 onwards. Finally, the newest addition, BEYOND THE LINES – Novelists in Light, offers a more literary approach. Since September 19th, five female artists have brought to life the works of George Sand, Virginia Woolf, Marguerite Duras, Colette and Tamara Duda. A rather unexpected way to rediscover literature, accessible from age 12 onwards.
Two immersive experiences to discover with children
Good news for parents looking for an original activity to do in Lille as a family: L'Hybride has also created two programs specially adapted for the youngest. In THE NEW FABLES OF LA FONTAINE, the stories come to life all around the spectators. And the famous morals get a little update: here, the hare waits for the tortoise and the cicada findsrefuge with friends. That's much more pleasant. Another suggestion, INFINITELY SMALL, INFINITELY LARGE, which invites you to explore the mysteries of Earth and space, from tiny creatures to the vastness of the universe. Two poetic sessions of 25 minutes, accessible from age 4, that should also delight the accompanying adults.

An unusual cultural outing to enjoy all year long
And L'hybride hasn't abandoned its first loves at all. Open since 2007 and supported by the Rencontres Audiovisuelles association, this venue continues to offer evenings dedicated to short films on Thursdays and Fridays, in a friendly atmosphere with a bar and light refreshments. Immersive experiences are scheduled for Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with additional screenings during school holidays. So if you're looking for what to do in Lille this weekend, whether it's a romantic getaway, time with friends, or a family outing, here's a cultural activity that's truly different from your typical cinema experience. And we promise, no need for 3D glasses to have a visual feast.
