When the temperatures rise, many people from Lille head straight for the Côte d’Opale. But honestly, there’s a much closer (and frankly fabulous) alternative to enjoy a spot by the water without spending three hours stuck in traffic. Head to Lac des Argales, in Rieulay.
A hidden sandy beach at the foot of a slag heap
Yes, there really is a beautiful sandy beach just 30 minutes from Lille. Located by the Lac des Argales, this artificial beach nestled at the foot of a UNESCO-listed slag heap almost makes you feel like you've completely left the North for a few hours. In summer, towels slowly blanket the sand while others prefer to set up a bit further away on the well-maintained banks to enjoy a peaceful picnic by the water. And the bonus is that the atmosphere is bubbly!

Canoeing, strolls, and swimming on the agenda
The great thing about this place is that you can easily spend a whole day here without getting bored. On-site, it's possible to walk around the lake in about an hour, rent a canoe, a windsurf board, or even a small sailboat thanks to the water sports center located right next to it. And of course, ment, as soon as the sun peeks out, swimming quickly becomes the main activity.
A natural spot in the heart of the Scarpe-Escaut Park
The Lac des Argales is located right in the heart of the Scarpe-Escaut Regional Natural Park, which explains why the setting is so delightful. With its vast green spaces, paths around the water, and the large spoil tip overlooking the landscape, the scenery is completely different from what we usually imagine around Lille. It's definitely the kind of place perfect for an impromptu mini summer Sunday without going too far.
A perfect alternative to the coast
And most importantly: there's no need to set an alarm for 6 AM to avoid traffic jams. The lake is much more accessible than the Opal Coast while still providing that true feeling of a summer break that we all crave as soon as the first sunny days arrive. Little tip: go in late afternoon to enjoy the sunset over the lake. It’s a guaranteed hit.
