Yes, Pairi Daiza is making headlines again!
A Historic Birth at Pairi Daiza
On March 17, 2026, at the animal park of Pairi Daiza in Brugelette, Belgium, a baby Roxellane monkey (better known as the golden monkey) was born! This is an extraordinary birth, as this species, native to the Qinling mountains in China, is extremely rare outside of its natural habitat. It is currently classified as "endangered" by the IUCN, with an estimated population of fewer than 4,000 individuals worldwide.

A first in Belgium
This is the very first birth of this species on Belgian soil! The arrival of this baby is the result of significant efforts made since 2025 by the teams at Pairi Daiza and the China Wildlife Conservation Association, as part of a scientific conservation program. Last year, three golden monkeys were transferred from China: two females, Juan Juan and Lu Lu, as well as one male, Liuyun. They have been living in a specially designed habitat of 600 m², with particularly attentive care. And it was Lu Lu who created the special moment on March 17th, giving birth to the little one in a cozy wooden cabin, away from hustle and bustle.
A baby still very much protected
For now, it’s impossible to know if it’s a boy or a girl: mom is keeping a very close eye on her newborn and is keeping it safe.
The little one is safely tucked away. The caregivers confirm that everything is going well. The baby has been quickly fed, Lu Lu is in great shape, and the other members of the group are already helping with protecting and grooming the little one. In short, it's a very organized little family, much more so than many of us! The park also mentions that the mother and her baby are intentionally staying in a calm indoor space, away from the public, to strengthen their bond.Voir cette publication sur Instagram
A great excuse to return to Pairi Daiza
With giant pandas, elephants, immersive worlds, and now a super rare baby golden monkey, Pairi Daiza just keeps on giving us reasons to visit again. And even though this little newcomer isn't showing up much yet, this birth is wonderful news for the conservation of the species. Sometimes, the best surprises are closer than we think!
