Just a two-minute walk from Lille-Flandres, a grand door opened just a month ago to a universe we didn't really expect to find here. Behind the façade of Babel Lille, you quickly leave the sidewalks of the neighborhood and step into a decor inspired by the Northern ports, the Spice Route, and great maritime journeys. Curious to see if the experience lived up to the promises, we spent a night there. Verdict? We'd gladly go back, if only for the breakfast.
A hotel that tells a story down to the finest details
What strikes you right from the first few minutes is the care taken in the decoration. In this hotel, nothing seems to have been chosen by chance. The custom-designed stained glass, the soft-curved woodwork, the monumental light fixtures, the woven mirrors reminiscent of ropes, the basins inspired by amphorae, and the large hand-painted mural of mermaids give the impression of visiting the home of an explorer returned from a very long journey. The marine theme is everywhere.
Everywhere... but never in a kitschy way. A few seashells, sandy hues, deep greens, natural materials, and warm lighting are all it takes to create that quite rare feeling: being far from Lille, while just a stone’s throw from the train station. The 71 rooms extend this atmosphere with raw linen, velvet, aged brass, vintage tiles, and furniture specially designed for the hotel. The real heartthrob? Breakfast
We’ve seen bigger buffets, that's for sure. But rarely have we come across such a cohesive spread! While many hotels stack up on industrial products, Babel does just the opposite by shining the spotlight on local artisans. The coffee comes from MUDA, the teas are crafted by Unami, the bread is supplied by local producers, the jams are made by nearby artisans, and a big part of the offerings is prepared in-house. The result? You'll find fresh, simple, well-sourced, and above all, delicious products. Honestly, it’s probably one of the best hotel breakfasts we've tried in Lille in recent years. Not because it tries to impress with a hundred different choices, but because each item feels like it’s been thoughtfully selected.

It's really a hotel. The ground floor has been designed as a true living space where locals, travelers, and curious minds can come to have a drink, work a few hours, or simply enjoy the decor. The menu also highlights local producers with several regional beers, as well as local wines (which is rare!), short supply chain coffees, homemade sweets, and a selection of drinks inspired by the Spice Route. What we remember most from that first night isn't just the decor or the comfort. It's the feeling that everything has been thoughtfully considered. The smiles from the team, the little details in every room, the choice of materials, the work done with local artisans... Nothing feels standardized. In a city where hotel openings are booming, Babel manages to offer a true sense of personality. And it feels wonderful.
