A van road trip between Austria and Germany
The journey begins in Austria, heading toward Tyrol. If you were planning to take the mythical Silvretta Alpine High Route, be careful: part of the road is currently closed due to major safety works. Head further north instead, between Bludenz and Landeck. Don't worry, the scenery remains absolutely spectacular.
Take the time to stop in Innsbruck. Its historic center, its colorful facades, and especially the mountains that seem to appear at the end of every street make it a perfect pause before getting back to wide-open spaces.
The rest of the journey follows the Gerlos Alpine road, passing the impressive Krimml waterfalls, before reaching one of the highlights of the trip: the Grossglockner Alpine High Route. Over 48 kilometers, the road winds through the Hohe Tauern National Park and climbs to over 2,500 meters in altitude. Needless to say, between the hairpin turns and the panoramic views, you'll regularly find a good excuse to stop.

From Bavarian Castles to Germany's Great Lakes
After crossing the Austrian passes, continue your road trip toward Salzburg, then cross into Germany and head toward Bavaria. Your first major stop: Lake Chiemsee, nicknamed the "Bavarian Sea," a vast lake surrounded by mountains where you'll definitely want to park your van for a few hours.
Then hit the road toward Bad Tölz, followed by Mittenwald, a charming alpine village nestled among peaks, before reaching Garmisch-Partenkirchen, at the foot of Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain.
To finish this journey in style, head to Linderhof Castle, then Füssen, at the gateway to some of Bavaria's most iconic landscapes and castles. In just a few days, you'll have experienced turquoise lakes, alpine villages, mountain peaks, and fairy-tale castles. It's hard to imagine a better ending for this road trip.

In a van, the weather almost decides your itinerary
This is probably what we love most about this kind of trip: you don't need to plan everything. Sunny skies are forecast further east? You hit the road. The weather changes? You adjust your plans. A lake catches your eye a little too much? You stay an extra day.
