This year, we're focusing on our beloved food to reduce, recycle, and reuse!
What is European Waste Reduction Week (SERD)?
Coordinated in France by ADEME, SERD is an annual event to learn how to consume smartly and limit waste. For 2024, the chosen theme is "Sustainable Food." Yes, because food waste starts long before that camembert makes it to your fridge.
Concrete tips to reduce your waste
To get started on reducing your waste, here are practical tips that everyone can adopt daily to take a step toward a more sustainable lifestyle:
- Respect the cold chain: Store your food under optimal conditions to extend its shelf life. Learn to distinguish between DLC (Use By Date) and DDM (Minimum Durability Date) so you won't throw away your products too early. Check the recommendations here.
- Plan your meals: By planning your meals, you only buy what you need, thus reducing both surplus and food waste.
- Use your leftovers: Turn your leftovers into new dishes. A quick internet search will provide you with innovative recipes to reuse even the most unexpected ingredients.
Buy in bulk : Reduce your packaging waste by buying in bulk whenever possible. Bring your own containers to further limit waste.- Compost : If you have a garden, composting is a fantastic way to reduce your waste and naturally enrich your soil.
- Reuse and recycle : Before tossing something away, think about whether you can reuse or recycle it. Many materials can have a second life, so look into recycling options in your community.
