The official ballet of all our childhood memories
On May 17, 2025, the sky over Mérignac is about to be filled… with paper airplanes! The Daniel Colombier sports complex becomes, for one day, the stage for an event as quirky as it is unifying: the third edition of the world paper airplane throwing championship, orchestrated by the Rotary Club of Mérignac, with the support of the city.
.
A global competition for a good cause!
Behind this fun competition lies a serious goal: to support the DFCI, the association for Defense of Forests Against Fires, in connection with the reforestation of the forests in the Gironde region. Here, we mix good vibes with environmental commitment.
Starting at noon, participants—whether amateurs or experts—will compete in the qualifying rounds (until 3 PM), before the finals scheduled for 3:30 PM. Among the challengers, Julien Mathieu, the reigning French champion, will be there to soar into the competition. And the vibe promises to be international: 10 countries will be represented, with young people coming from Brazil, Colombia, Taiwan, Thailand, Italy, the USA, and many more!
Open Visits for Everyone
But the day doesn’t stop there. Workshops focused on the environment, fun activities, outdoor concerts, generous raffle, on-site catering : everything is set up to make the championship a wonderful intergenerational celebration. Entry is free for spectators, while competitors can try their luck for €8 by signing up on the HelloAsso website.

A unique event in the world, aerial and committed, proving that with just a simple sheet of paper, we can make fly not just planes... but also ideas! Last year, this charity event brought together 400 participants and spectators and helped raise €5000 for the fight against forest fires.
