About 1 hour and 45 minutes from Bordeaux, on the Charente side of the estuary, Talmont-sur-Gironde attracts thousands of visitors every year eager to explore one of the smallest and most picturesque medieval villages in the Southwest.

A bastide founded by an English king

Founded in 1284 by Edward I of England, then Duke of Aquitaine, the village was designed as a strategic bastide to oversee the estuary. Its checkerboard layout, typical of medieval bastides, is still perfectly visible today. Behind its ramparts, the narrow streets lined with white houses and colorful shutters are adorned, starting in spring, with hollyhocks that climb up the facades. The atmosphere here is peaceful out of season, almost timeless.

The Sainte-Radegonde Church, Sentinel of the Estuary

It's impossible to mention Talmont without talking about its iconic Romanesque church, Sainte-Radegonde. Built in the 12th century, long before the official establishment of the town, it seems to sit on the cliff's edge, overlooking the flowing waters of the estuary. With its carved apse, decorative brackets, and seaside cemetery, it is one of the most photographed sites in Charente-Maritime. On clear days, the view stretches endlessly, blending sky and water, in the ever-changing light that is characteristic of the estuary.

Between Heritage and Wild Nature

Beyond its medieval heritage, Talmont captivates with its natural surroundings. The limestone cliffs tower over the carrelets (those charming fishing huts on stilts typical of the estuary), while the nearby marshes remind us of the historical importance of fishing and river trade. Today, the village thrives mainly on tourism, with its quaint artisan shops, galleries, and a few restaurants open during the lovely seasons. In the summer, the population swells and contrasts with the tranquil off-season vibe of its 80 permanent residents.

Compact and entirely pedestrian, Talmont can be explored in just a few hours, but it leaves a lasting impression. With its medieval heritage, breathtaking views, and the gentle charm of the Charente region, this tiny peninsula shows that the smallest villages can offer the biggest landscapes.
