If Bordeaux is undoubtedly the city of wine, it is gradually making room for other spirits. This is evidenced by the success of Moon Harbour whisky. Produced in Bordeaux, just a stone's throw from the docks of lights, its distillery is a unique place full of history. In the heart of a former bunker from World War II, the whiskies age in barrels of local wines.whisky moon harbour bordeaux©Philippe Caumes

Moon Harbour: The first whisky made in Bordeaux

Behind this thriving business, we find Jean-Philippe Ballanger, a whisky enthusiast who founded the brand in 2014. As the first on the market in Bordeaux, he saw a little gold mine in malted elixir. This led him to develop the only range of Bordeaux whiskies with barley originating from the island of Patiras in Bordeaux stills and barrels from partner properties in the region.

On the menu? 3 types of whiskies available in multiple aging options, giving a total of 5 references. From "Single Malt" made with barley, to "Pur Malt" with corn, to his latest innovation, the smoked "Single Malt" with seaweed from the Arcachon Bay. The range highlights boldness and local products. The whiskies are appreciated for their quality.Their aromatic character, their intensity and their roundness.moon harbour bordeaux wishky©Shoot The Land

A 100% local production

Don't forget the floral gin reference infused with Combava lemon, juniper berries, timut pepper, goji berries, coriander seeds and Espelette pepper to give a spicy touch of the Southwest. The entire production is local, everything is done on site until bottling. A boutique sells all the house's spirits and welcomes customers from Tuesday to Saturday

An immersion in the distillery during guided tours

The impressive distillery required 3 million euros of renovation work. Its stunning setting can be discovered during private tours during the day. The 1.5-hour tours take place all week from Tuesday to Saturday (except Wednesday). There are 3 sessions each day at 11am, 2:30pm, and 4:30pm. In small groups, visitors enjoy a tour of all facilities (production & redesigned bunker with barrels) which concludes with a tasting of 4 spirits. Price: €20 per person (-25% for students).

And to meet the general demand, Moon Harbour has also launched its "Visites Privilèges". In groups of up to 10 people, they are from 6:30 pm to 10 pm by reservation. The group strolls through the distillery alongside its founder, attends an exclusive tour by the cellar master, and ends on a high note with a moment of exchange over a tasting of spirits accompanied by tapas.
